Sliding and Gliding Windows Features and Options
The terms sliding and gliding are interchangeable, and we use both here. Pella and Jeld-Wen are among the major brands that call them sliding windows. Andersen and other brands use the term gliding windows. Milgard opts for the name horizontal sliders.
All those terms refer to windows that open horizontally. Single sliding windows have one sash that opens, and both right-hand and left-hand opening windows are made. Double sash sliding and gliding windows feature two movable sashes of ventilation options.
Both pre-made and custom sliding and gliding windows are available.
Standard sliding and gliding windows are manufactured in a range of popular sizes and sold online or in home improvement and builders supply stores. These pre-made windows offer limited choices for frame material, color/finish, glass and accessories. All national brands and many regional brands make lines of standard gliding windows in good and better series.
Custom sliding windows aren’t built until you order them online, from chain stores or local window and door stores. In terms of quality, the series are better and best. Custom gliding windows offer you a much wider spectrum of sizes, materials and accessories. Once ordered, expect the windows to be ready in three to six weeks.
Your range of gliding window options includes:
- Materials – Window frames are manufactured in vinyl ($-$$$), aluminum ($-$$$), wood composite ($$-$$$), fiberglass ($$-$$$) wood ($$-$$$$) and several species of wood with vinyl-clad or aluminum-clad exteriors ($$-$$$$).
- Color and Finish— Vinyl and fiberglass are produced in one to three or four colors depending on the window brand and series. Composite and solid wood can be ordered bare or primed for you to stain or paint or prefinished in a range of stain colors. Many wood window series are built with aluminum or vinyl exterior cladding offered in 30+ colors. The cladding gives the wood excellent weather protection.
- Locks and hardware – Vinyl-coated and powder-coated hardware is made in several colors; metal hardware choices include chrome, gold, brass, bronze and other metals in a range of finishes from polished to brushed.
- Glass, Grilles and Screens – Window glass is often called glazing, and it is available in single, double and triple pane options. Energy efficient, low-E glass packages are made for the climate demands of various regions of the country. Tinted, textured, tempered and shatterproof glass is available too. You have a choice of grille styles or grille-free windows and several screen options.
While custom windows can be made beyond these parameters, most sliding and gliding windows fall into these ranges:
- Width: 11.5” to 84”
- Height: 21.5” to 72”

Pros and Cons of Sliding/Gliding Windows
Gliding windows are easy to open and close when the tracks are clean, and they offer decent ventilation. Sliding window prices are lower than most other types of windows of the same material, quality and accessories. Since they don’t open out like casement and awning windows, sliding windows are suitable for facing walkways, porches, patios and decks.
On the other hand, slider windows don’t lock as snug as crank windows, so can be drafty, especially as they get older. The sash frames in the middle of the window area obscure the view like single-hung and double-hung windows do, and unlike casement and awning windows. The tracks must be kept clean for smooth operation and to allow rainwater to empty through the track’s drain holes.

Factors that Affect Sliding/Gliding Window Costs
Apart from the variables covered above, there are three factors to consider when hiring a window installer.
First, replacement windows take longer to install than new-construction windows.
Secondly, the time of year that you order your windows and have them installed could affect sliding window prices. The most competitive estimates in cold areas of the country are given in early spring and late fall when window installers are hungry for work. Window manufacturers often put their windows on sale at these times. In warm climates, it is usually the winter months when installers aren’t as busy and want business to keep their crews working.
Finally, who you hire to install windows is very important. While a handyman service might offer window installation, it is important to hire an installer that is experienced and one that is licensed and insured for your protection. If the work is done poorly, repair and replacement costs will erase any savings you enjoyed.
If you’re working with a general contractor on a major remodeling project, the GC can hire the installers, but you’re paying the general contractor for that service, and you don’t control who does the work.
A proven strategy for getting quality installation for a good price is to request estimates from several prescreened installers who are licensed and insured. If they know they’re competing for the work, they will give you their very best sliding and gliding window installation estimates.
