An Overview of the Pella Window Company

The Pella company was founded in Pella, Iowa by the Kuyper family who invented a roll-up window screen. The shade-type screen, the Rolscreen, has gone through many innovative improvements and is still manufactured today. More profitably, the windows the company began to produce became popular throughout the Midwest and eventually the entire country.

Pella remains privately owned by the Kuyper Family. Currently, the company employs 8,000 team members and has 17 production facilities with products featured in more than 200 window and door showrooms. They are also carried by several national “big box” stores. Annual sales for Pella window and door products exceed $1Billion.

Pella has adopted the Kaizen Methodology of continuous improvement, founded on the Japanese philosophy of change for the better. The methodology has been applied to a wide range of industries including manufacturing, healthcare, banking and government.

Pella Window Prices & Costs

Like most successful businesses, Pella has created lines of windows across the price spectrum in order to appeal to a wider range of consumers. Pella Architect Series and Pella Reserve Series windows are the top of the line. Both wood window series are among the most expensive in the industry and are produced in Traditional and Contemporary lines. They offer you rich beauty and a wonderful variety of options and accessories.

If you want Pella wood windows at a more affordable price, the Pella 250 Series vinyl and Pella Impervia fiberglass are great alternatives. It is comprised of the most popular sizes, features and options with only a slight drop-off in quality. The energy efficiency is very good too.

Pella Impervia fiberglass windows have a woodgrain texture. The Duracast technology creates a tough, attractive window suitable for any home and climate.

The Encompass by Pella Series windows are Pella’s most energy-efficient vinyl windows available. With a lifetime limited warranty, you can count on outstanding durability. For an affordable vinyl window, consider the Encompass by Pella windows that are also known as ThermaStar by Pella windows.

Most of the Pella windows series offer Energy Star rated glass packages, some designed to meet the characteristics of specific climates – very cold, those with a majority of sunny days and more.

Main Reasons to Choose Pella Windows

There are good reasons to consider Pella for your new window or replacement window project – and a few reasons to be hesitant.

Here are Pella window pros and cons.

Pros:

Excellent selection begins with materials – wood, vinyl and fiberglass windows to consider.

Every style of window including single-hung, double-hung, casement, awning, sliding, fixed/picture and bay/bow windows.

Plenty of options within each material – colors, wood stain tones, hardware finishes, between-glass grilles, glass choices for your climate and integrated security sensors are among the ways you can tailor Pella windows to fit your style.

Affordable wood windows, the Pella Lifestyle wood windows, are a good value. They are comparable in quality to Andersen 400 Series wood windows.

Premium and super-premium wood windows too.

Pella’s Impervia fiberglass windows are considered among the best fiberglass windows sold today. Take a look at Milgard’s fiberglass composite for comparison.

DIY options – While most homeowners work with a window contractor to obtain the windows and have them professionally installed, many Pella windows are sold to the public at home improvement stores like Lowes.

Note: Lowes sells a limited selection of Impervia windows. And the Pella 150 Series vinyl windows, a builders grade window, is sold exclusively at Lowes.

Cons

Pella windows can be expensive. While homeowners expect the Reserve custom wood windows to be pricey, you might be surprised how much the Architect Traditional and Contemporary windows cost too.

Pella customer satisfaction ratings are not as high as some competitor brands – namely Andersen and Window World. The problem seems to be that the quality of the experience consumers have with some local Pella specialists isn’t great. Check your local Pella dealer’s Google reviews to find one that does a good job with installation and customer care.

Pella vs Andersen Windows

These two major brands compete in markets across the US.

There are advantages to each.

Pella offers vinyl windows and fiberglass windows. Andersen windows are not available in either material.

Pella’s Architect and Reserve Series windows are every bit as beautiful and long-lasting as Andersen E-Series and A-Series wood windows. And you have an appealing range of options to customize your Pella wood windows.

Pella has specific lines of windows designed for stormy Coastal environments – the Defender Series and Hurricane Shield Series. Andersen offers windows for storm zones – but does it by enhancing its existing window lines for those climates.

Andersen makes proprietary Fibrex windows, a blend of wood fiber and polymers to create a unique, strong and attractive frame. It is used on Renewal by Andersen, the Andersen 100 Series and on the exteriors of the E-Series.

Renewal by Andersen is JD Power’s top window brand choice for Manufacturer and for Customer Service. Pella doesn’t make the top 3 in either category.

Pella vs Other Major Brands

Ply Gem, Simonton, Harvey, Jeld-Wen and a few others have more vinyl window series choices than Pella. Pella offers only the 250 Series and Encompass by Pella, an entry-level vinyl window.

Jeld-Wen windows offer more series of windows including wood and vinyl.

Milgard ranks above Pella in the JD Power Manufacturer category. And Window World windows outrank Pella in the Retail/Customer Service niche.

Pella stands out with its fiberglass Impervia line and the high-end, exceptionally attractive Pella Reserve windows in Traditional and Contemporary series.
